Best Animation Movies of 2022

2022 was full of incredible animated movies, from Toy Story spinoffs to some amazing anime titles. Guillermo del Toro's fresh take on Pinocchio was both necessary and visually stunning.

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele star in Wendell & Wild, Henry Selick's stop-motion film exploring childhood trauma. Selick has added yet another gothic and dark animation masterpiece to his impressive portfolio.

1. The Bad Guys

2022 has seen an array of animated films hit theaters. We have witnessed nostalgic throwbacks to childhood favorites, original concepts that add fresh life to animation and ambitious mind-benders that push its limits further; while dozens of underrated gems remain unsung.

One of the stand-out films was The Bad Guys, about an ensemble cast of criminal animal villains who decide to change their ways and become "good" instead of their previous ruthlessness. Based on Aaron Blabey's Scholastic children's book series and directed by Pierre Perifel (known for Kung Fu Panda 2, Shrek Forever After and Rise of the Guardians animation work). Etan Cohen of Idiocracy and Tropic Thunder fame served as screenwriter.

Sam Rockwell delivers an unexpectedly humorous performance as Mr Wolf, leader of an infamous animal criminal gang including Mr Snake (sly pickpocket), Mr Piranha (anger management specialist), Ms Shark (jaded safecracker) and tech expert Ms Tarantula. Marc Maron gives an hilariously grouchy performance as self-loathing snake; Richard Ayoade appears as PR expert guinea pig Professor Marmalade while The Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Alex Borstein plays police chief Misty Luggins (The Marvelous Mrs Maiseel).

The Bad Guys is an impressively entertaining film that will delight both adults and kids. Packed with laughter-inducing moments and thrilling action sequences, The Bad Guys brings something new to its genre and offers audiences something they will remember for years.

2. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

DreamWorks was delighted with the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Nominated for an Academy Award and with worldwide grosses near $450 Million worldwide sales, it captured audiences across generations and proved immensely popular with audiences everywhere.

Antonio Banderas reprises his iconic role of Puss in Boots in this long-awaited sequel to 2011's Puss in Boots film. Now down to only one life left of eight remaining, Puss finds himself in dire circumstances and must find ways to survive and escape before it's too late.

As Puss sits alone at a pub, he is suddenly confronted by The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura). Brandishing two scythes and threatening to cut him in two, Puss quickly draws his sword but the Wolf disarms him; explaining he is Death who wants one final wish from Puss.

As part of his final wish, the courageous cat agrees to embark on an exciting adventure alongside his best friend Humpty Alexander Dumpty - the town drunk. Together they travel across the land encountering murderer's row villains such as Goldilocks and her three bears, Papa Bear, Jack Horner, and finally Big Bad Wolf.

Puss in Boots and his friends must battle Jack Horner and his henchmen as well as Death himself to regain possession of the Wishing Star, an object with magical properties that symbolizes wish fulfillment.

Joel Crawford directs this comedy-drama that features some witty dialogue and an incredible performance by Antonio Banderas as Sancho Panza. Reuniting with Salma Hayek who played his love interest from Desperado is another treat! The Last Wish is an entertaining animated movie worth seeing for any fan of Desperado; also released alongside it is an all-new short entitled The Trident which should also be checked out.

3. Mad God

Phil Tippett's stop-motion classic Mad God disproves any claim that 3-D CGI animation is necessary for quality animated moviemaking. Based out of Berkeley and well known for his work in Star Wars, Robocop, and Jurassic Park (notice his use of stage and tabletop puppets, miniature sets and innovative animation techniques to craft this nihilistic biblical epic - you may recognize him from work like Star Wars, Robocop or Jurassic Park), Phil spent 30 years crafting what critics dubbed an out-of-this-world vision."

Tippett's film takes place in an isolated world filled with war pigs and strange, monstrous beings, following an assassin through surreal landscapes and cursed inhabitants "forged from the most primal horrors of their subconscious minds". On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes it holds an incredible 91% approval rating with an average score of 7.8/10 making it one of the top animated movies for 2022.

4. Wendell & Wild

Henry Selick made a return to stop-motion animation after an extended hiatus with Wendell & Wild. It marked his first film since Coraline, and Selick has become known for mastering it through films like Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas. Selick combined family with demons in telling Kat Elliott's (Lyric Ross from This Is Us) story through family ties and grant-funded reintegration program where she learns how to summon Wendell and Wild - who unleash hell with hair dye, magic lipstick, and some love.

As expected, this movie looks beautiful with its dark and twisted sense of humor. While not child-friendly like other Disney films, it does address difficult topics like racism and mental illness without shying away. At its heart lies family values such as forgiveness and being yourself - qualities which inevitably shine through in this tale of youth rebellion.

Wendell & Wild stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, previously seen on the comedy series Key & Peele. Both actors bring excellent chemistry to Wendell & Wild and bring plenty of laughter into its narrative. Additionally, this movie boasts outstanding voice acting performances from other cast members.

Netflix will release this animated movie for viewing on October 28. Perfect for Halloween and featuring enough originality to stand out, it proves that in an age where CG animation has become commonplace there are still filmmakers willing to experiment and use traditional techniques such as 2D animation - showing why its place remains strong within the industry.

5. Lightyear of Star Command

Buzz Lightyear returns in an all-new adventure set in the Gamma Quadrant galaxy that's "very, very, very far." Along with Princess Mira Nova (voiced by Nicole Sullivan), Booster the large alien (Stephen Furst), and sarcastic robot XR (Neil Flynn), Buzz takes on Emperor Zurg and his minions - as developed by Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle of Kim Possible and Big Hero 6: The Series fame. Production took place between 1999-2000 with 62 episodes being produced!

While the movie depicted Zurg as Buzz's principal adversary, the show provided ample opportunity for other antagonists. Lord Angstrom attempted to overthrow King Nova; Fop Doppler controlled Slam-Bots; and Norbert Klerm plotted against Buzz in order to acquire fusion crystals for personal gain.

Pixar was also the first to introduce alien characters other than humans into its universe, such as Shragorakian Janitor Booster Sinclair Munchapper; Jo-ad's Froglike Creature from its agricultural planet Jo-ad who is both huge and sweet; Officer Panchex from Rhizome; Professor Triffid from Rhizome - these all would appear later in movies and video games.
